Lynchburg, TN

On this page I will share a few pictures I took of Lynchburg, the little town where the Jack Daniel's whiskey is made. The most important place for a Jack Daniel's collector is off course the town square. Since 1800's the square has been the social center of Lynchburg and Moore County. A little market place where a few shop sell Jack Daniel's stuff.

The Lynchburg Hardware and General store

And off course the famouse "Lynchburg hardware and General store" . This store sells a lot off new Jack Daniel's stuff, and has two floors full of it! Clothes, glassware, trays, miniature cars ect. etc. This picture is taken on my first visit to Lynchburg in 1998. At this moment the Hardware & General store is more a "store" than a hangout place for the real collector. The store is owned by the Distillery it self so you can "only" buy new stuff. They do got there own website! Check out www.JackDaniels.com.

Baker's Antiques & Collectibles

One of the greatest stores in Lynchburg, TN must be the one from Mr Clarence and Mrs. Bertha Baker. These two fine people have - what I think - the best store in town! This is the place to be! It is maybe a small store but for a Jack Daniel's collector he has more valueable stuff than any other store on the town square. And if you visit this store you will be treated with a warm Tennessee hospitality you could only dream of ! Trust me! On the picture in the middle with the cap, Mr baker and at the left his lovely wife Mrs Baker.
The skinny dude is me and that "older looking" ( but trust me....he is a real nice guy..hihi) is Mr W. Cothran (my bud!)

out side the store, nice place to rest or talk to the people that shop around....

Sully's gifts

On other great store is the one from Mr. Sullenger, also known as Sully.... He got two stores on the town square, "Sully's gifts" and "Tennesee Stuff". In both stores they got a lot of older Jack Daniel's Items like the Jugs and the bottles.

I got a lot of pictures from stuff he got for sale inside his stores, here are a few to give you an impression.

This a very nice and rare stamp used for the Lem Motlow labels (shop price was around $ 400.00.. sold on Ebay in 2004 for ... only $ 250.00)

This is a rare collectable c1910-1915 Birmingham Ala. miniature bottle. (price $ 1000.00)

The bottle at the right is the bigger size Birmingham bottle....(price $ 1998.00)

Both very rare -off course-.

The bottle at the right is the "double lip" c1895-1900 square bottle. (price $ 1000.00)

Sully's gifts store that is also online at www.sullysgifts.com. There site is not up-dated for a long time. Mr Sully promised me it would be on line again very soon (10/2001)

The Barrelshop

New is "the Barrelshop". Another Jack Daniel's Distillery owned shop where they sell furniture made from old and used barrels. Barrel Bars, wall bars, parlor chairs, barrelplanters and some small stuff like a pool cue holder, barrel stave coatrack, mug holder and lots more! Here are some nice pictures from inside there store. Email address is craig_street_warehouse@jackdaniels.com

(price for one barrel bar is $ 475.00, on the picture you see 4 of them, looks real good!!)
empty barrels are sold as well, I Loved them, but they are to big for transport to the Netherlands, Europe.

Parlor chairs and tables. ($ 80.00 a chair)

Moore County Jail

One other nice thing to visit on the Townsquare is the Moore County Jail. The lock-up dates from 1893 till 1990! I've been there and man, this is a good jail! Cold, windy and realy unplesant to be! The jailhouse is older than the courthouse!

The Gazebo

The Gazebo where the Silver Cornet band used to play....

Beautiful sunny, but cold 1st November 2001. The day after the BBQ, back to normal....

The Farmers Bank

Below a very old picture, it is of the original Farmers bank in Lynchburg. The photo was made around 1900. Frank "Spoon" Motlow is standing second to the left in the doorway. Spoon was the second president of the Farmers Bank and standing next to him is Tom Motlow head cashier and next to Tom Motlow is Rufus Alonzo Parks vice president of the bank. We got Joel to thank for sharing these great old pictures of Lynchburg with us. With out him we problebly wouldn't have seen them...

Miss Mary Bobo's "Boarding house"

Than there are a few other things that are interesting. Like Miss Mary Bobo's Boarding house. A Landmark dating back to 1866 and now serving southern style dinners. Miss Bobo's boarding house began back in 1908 when Miss Bobo opened a hotel and boarding house here. It has been a testimony to Lynchburg hospitality ever since. She ran the boarding house until her death in 1983. You still can enjoy there southern cooking even today! You have to make reservations!

They called it the "Bobo Hilton".

The Lynchburg cemetery

Than there is the Lycnhburg cemetery. A place where Mr jack, Lem Motlow and Miss Bobo are burried.

Mr. Jack Daniel's Grave

Mr Lem Motlow's grave & Miss Mary Bobo's grave.

Liquor stores around Lynchburg, Tennessee

If you visit Lynchburg one day it is a good idea to take a day for checking out the local Liquor stores for some nice deals on Jack Daniel's items and bottles. You will find not only all sorts of regular bottles from the Black Label and the Green label but also tru collectables like I did at all my three visites to Tennessee. What I found (but not always bought....) are the Lem Motlow bottles from 200ml flask up to the 1 liter square bottle version at Joe's Liquor store.

Do you see the prices? Uhh.....
Joes Liquors & Wines

Shelbyville, TN 37160 931-684-0777

I found a lot of the older 90 % proof bottles, incl. the old Matric sizes like the Quart and the pints (!). Want more rare bottles?? Let me tell you I bought a Gold Medal 1971 sealed with cardboard box for just.... $ 500.00 (!). I have also seen the Silver Cornet and the Maxwell (1971) for sale incl. the box. Nice detail on these bottles was that they had the Tennessee Tax sticker on them. More rare items?? What about original jugs from 1890?? Where can you find these stores...?? Uh... I can't tell because there is to much I still want for my own collection, but let me tell you, just drive around and you will find them your self! (trust me). Here are some pictures of some great stores I visited last time.

Frugal MacDoogal is one of the biggest and best selling stores around town. They even got there own Single Barrel bottle.
Here is there store address: 701 Division Street (at 8th Avenue South & Division), Nashville, Tennessee 37203.
You can visit there website at: http://www.frugalmacdoogal.com.

Here are some pictures off Jack Daniel's display's used around Lynchburg. For us, collectors from outside the US this is very impressive if you know we only got the 700ml black label bottle in our regular liquor store!

A nice big Liquor store is "Stones River Liquors", they also got there own Single Barrel bottle. Stones Liqour store is located at: 208 North Thompson Lane, Murfreesboro, TN 37129 615-895-1888.
