Mule day (III)
| Here is an early photo of Mule Day Trade Day in Lynchburg. There could be as many as 400 mules traded and sold on the day that these auctions were held. Lem Motlow established the first rent-a-mule business in the nation. This photo was taken from the second floor of the court house looking north. The big two story house that you see in the background is now a funeral home. It was a homeplace, it later became the first hospital in Lynchburg and now is a funeral home. The wooden "thing" in the photo is what I believe weight scales to weigh the mules, horses, hogs and cattle for the sales that were held in Lynchburg. This was a common thing to have on the squares in Tenn in the early days. |
